I went to the library this morning and checked out Lucy the Diamond Fairy and Scarlet the Garnet Fairy from the Rainbow Magic series, then proceeded to have this conversation:
Me: I’ve read about a dozen of these books now. I’m completely sick of them, but my daughter loves them.
Library Woman: How old is she?
Me: Five
Library Woman: Oh, she should read them later and then she can read them herself.
Me: [Noncommittal shrug. After all, my daughter LOVES these books.]
Library Woman: If she reads them all now, what’s she going to read when she’s older?
Me [what I actually said]: I don’t think we’ll run out of books anytime soon.
Me [what I should have said]: Dostoyevsky
