On holiday with photons

We went to Whistler last week! For the entire week, and it was amazing. Biking, hiking, and picnicking, with a wee bit of reading thrown in to create absolute contentment.

Whenever I’m in a rented condo I’m drawn to the books left on endtables and coffee tables. It’s inevitable. Whatever quality literature I’ve intended to read is set aside, in order to see what tastes the absent, mysterious owners of the condo have.

Usually, I end up reading trash. Enjoyable, vaction-appropriate trash, but trash nonetheless.

This week was a little different. On the living room endtable, I found: How to Teach Quantum Physics to Your Dog, by Chad Orzel. And it’s not just a figurative title, either. The book’s actually about physics. So I read it.

Some of it, at least.

I read it partly because I’ve been following events at CERN ever since I heard they might create a black hole that will swallow the Earth. (I like advance notice of apocolypses, when possible.) Unfortunately, I understand about one percent of what I read about physics.

Well, I may now understand 1.1 percent. At the very least, I understand a teensy bit more about particles, waves, and photons.

I’m waiting to see if this will prove life-changing.
