Thank God for long weekends

The book that caught my eye at Kidsbooks last week was The Book of Negroes, this year’s Canada Reads selection.

I realize that I am practically the last person on earth who hasn’t read this book. My sister has read it. My mother has read it. Nine out of ten friends have read it. You would think that one of those so-called friends and relatives would have leant me a copy, but they’ve all been clinging to it like book-hoarding misers, leaving my at the mercy of the sneaky checkout bookshelf.

But on to the book itself… wow. I hope it was a good long weekend in Vancouver, because I spent my time in Africa, the U.S., Nova Scotia, and London. And if that book had lasted another 500 pages and another few countries, I’d still be reading.
